This is a DK tank build that is proven and relatively easy to set up, with several gear options for the newb up to the veteran trials master… The goal here is to be a true, defense-focused tank with tons of sustain, crowd control and a bit of group utility. Trials-proven and ready to rock.
Recommend imperial or nord race for stamina leaning players; dunmer works for stamina and magicka very well (though if you want to play DPS with a gear swap, dunmer is an obvious magicka choice). Altmer and Breton would also work very nicely but only for magicka-focused players. Breton’s spell resistance is way overkill, as you can see from my screenshots (i am imperial, so breton resistance would be even higher). The choice of stamina or magicka is irrelevant to the use of the build; choose what you wish based on race preference and what you would like to play if you needed to run a dps setup in pve or pvp when not tanking. A quick gear swap and you should be able to do either.
This build needs 0 attribute points into Health, so put all in your power stat of choice… For tanking, use health or prismatic glyphs on large pieces of armor/shield and healthy trait jewelry – the goal is to reach 25k health total before food, 28k+ after food. You really do not need more than 30k health, though.
Atronach mundus stone for either version for magicka sustain, and when swapping to DPS, you can choose another mundus such as the thief… just don’t forget to swap back! Yes, even as the stamina-focused option, the Atronach is a key piece for sustain with this build, as you generate stamina using magicka.
Champion Points Build Setup:
Warrior, focus on hardy and elemental defender as much as possible… this is the only way to further increase your mitigation with this build since you will easily be at the armor caps. Thick-skinned isn’t bad to have 10-20 points in, either, as a lot of boss and trash pulls in trials have AOE DOT mechanics. I spent 5 in Expert Defender and 5 in Bastion to unlock the 10-point passive for emergency raises. And it isn’t a bad idea to reduce light/heavy attack damage and increase shields a little since we spam them so much.
Thief, focus on magician (to 30 first) then arcanist to help magicka sustain. Feed magician until you hit diminishing returns, then balance with arcanist… Then back to magician. Some points in warlord are not a terrible thing (to reduce costs of 1hs skills and caltrops/vigor/guard), and i personally like 10 points in tumbling for the reduced break free.
Mage, the Mage trees are your dps trees and generally have little to do with tanking. As such, tailor your choices here with your stamina or magicka lean in mind. For mag builds, max out elemental expert and then get ~36 points in elfborn; after that, some points in thaumaturge for DOT damage boost are a good idea since the bulk of DK dps is fire DOTs. As a stam build, 90+ into mighty is key; after that 36+ into thaumaturge to increase your poison DOT damage, some points in precise for boosted crit damage and ~10 into penetration. 30+ in light/heavy attack bonus in center tree to unlock the damage reflect while blocking passive is nice, but not critical.
